A Week, Four Islands, Almost No Sea Days

The inter-island cruise is the most efficient way to see Hawaii. You unpack once in Honolulu, sail overnight between islands, and wake up in a new harbor most mornings. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America runs this seven-night loop every week of the year.

A typical week starts in Honolulu, then spends two days docked at Kahului on Maui, a day each at Hilo and Kona on the Big Island, and two days at Nāwiliwili on Kauaʻi before sailing back to Honolulu. The overnights on Maui and Kauaʻi are what make the itinerary special: you can stay ashore for a sunset dinner, start a Haleakalā trip before dawn or take a full-day tour without watching the clock. The order of ports can differ by sailing, so check the day-by-day plan for your date.

Why This Ship Can Do What Others Cannot

Pride of America’s interiors lean into an all-American theme.

Most cruise ships are registered in countries such as the Bahamas, Panama or Malta. Under a U.S. law dating to 1886, those foreign-flagged ships cannot carry passengers only between U.S. ports; they must include a foreign port. Pride of America is registered in the United States and crewed under U.S. rules, so it can sail entirely within Hawaii.

That is why a foreign-flagged ship cannot simply base itself in Honolulu and loop the islands every week. If you want an island-only week, this is the ship. Our page on the foreign-port rule explains the law in plain English.

Making the Most of an Island Week

  • Plan by island, not by day. Decide what matters most on each island — a crater sunrise on Maui, the volcano from Hilo, snorkeling off Kona, Waimea Canyon on Kauaʻi — and build around the overnights.
  • Use the two-day stops. On Maui and Kauaʻi, a rental car for both days often works out better than separate tours.
  • Check the tender in Kona. Ships usually anchor off Kailua-Kona and run tenders to the pier, so allow extra time for the first boats ashore.
  • Expect a scenic sail-by. The ship often passes along the Na Pali Coast of Kauaʻi, weather and sea conditions permitting — find a spot on deck early.
  • Add hotel nights. Many guests stay in Waikiki before the cruise, or fly to another island afterward for a few beach days.

Cabins and Timing

Because nearly every day is a port day, many travelers choose an inside or ocean-view cabin and spend their budget ashore; others want a balcony for the coastline sail-bys. Our sister site Cruise Ship Deck Plans explains how to read a deck plan and pick a quiet location. School holidays and the winter whale season are the busiest times, so book early for those weeks. Inter-Island Cruise Questions

Is Pride of America the only ship that sails only within Hawaii?

It is the ship that offers year-round seven-night inter-island cruises from Honolulu without a foreign port, because it sails under the U.S. flag. Foreign-flagged ships visit Hawaii on longer voyages that include a foreign port.

Do I need a passport for an inter-island cruise?

For U.S. citizens, an inter-island cruise that never leaves U.S. waters does not cross a border, but cruise lines set their own identification rules. Check the line’s current document requirements when you book; a valid passport is always the simplest choice.

Can I start the cruise somewhere other than Honolulu?

The standard sailing begins and ends in Honolulu. Ask our advisors if you want to combine the cruise with a hotel stay on another island; it is easy to fly between islands before or after.
